01/ WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR WHEN BUYING ANTIQUE JEWELLERY?
Buying antique or pre-owned jewellery is about provenance and personal style. If you are searching for a unique piece, or have an affinity with a particular era’s style, antique or pre-owned jewellery could be the answer. If you are choosing a piece together, it is wise to view jewellery from a wide range of eras to see what you are drawn to. If you plan to surprise someone with a unique creation take note of their style and choose something from a period that provides the best match.
02/ HOW DO YOU INSPECT STONES FOR WEAR AND TEAR?
Antique and pre-owned jewellery, in most cases, has already lasted one lifetime. Rings see much more wear and tear than any other items, thanks to their prominent position on our hands. Antique and pre-owned items should be checked to ensure mountings are secure and stones are not chipped or scratched on the edges or corners. These faults will increase the chance of losing gems and decrease the luminosity of stones, along with its overall value.
03/ ARE ANTIQUE AND PRE-OWNED PIECES RESTORED BEFORE SALE?
To give antique and pre-owned jewellery a second life, pieces are sensitively restored when needed. Some pieces only require a little polishing while other older pieces sometimes need stones reset in appropriately styled mounts that are in keeping with the original design as well as deep cleaning.
04/ WILL AN ANTIQUE PIECE LAST (ANOTHER) LIFETIME?
When antique and pre-owned rings, necklaces and other items are sensitively and professionally restored, they can last as long as seventy years and sometimes more. In some cases, restoration work can make original designs stronger and last for even longer than the first lifetime!
05/ IS ANTIQUE AND PRE-OWNED JEWELLERY A SOUND INVESTMENT?
Purchasing vintage, antique and pre-owned jewellery is sometimes a cheaper option than buying contemporary pieces, particularly if you are looking for unique, one-off designs. However, the purchasing process is more complex and it is wise to closely check each piece for faults or any work that may be required before deciding to purchase.
06/ HOW CAN I TELL IF A PIECE OF JEWELLERY IS A GENUINE ANTIQUE?
What looks like antique jewellery can sometimes be a clever reproduction of a particular style or piece. At Glydon and Guess we ensure all of our pieces are correctly labelled as antique or pre-owned by ensuring the sources we purchase from are reputable, checking for maker’s marks to help ascertain the original craftspeople behind the piece and tell-tale signs of wear that indicate a piece’s age and quality of the materials used to make it.
