01/ HOW OFTEN SHOULD MY CLOCK BE SERVICED?

Different clocks have different needs. The environment your clock is kept in, the age and condition it is an and the oil used to keep all the parts running smoothly all impact how often it needs to be serviced and oiled. As a general rule of thumb, clocks should be serviced each decade, when they begin working erratically or not at all.

02/ WILL MY CLOCK OR WATCH BE SENT AWAY FOR REPAIR OR DONE BY GLYDON AND GUESS?

At Glydon and Guess, we have a wealth of knowledge and decades of experience repairing and cleaning clocks and watches of all types. Our premises includes a fully operational workshop in which clock repairs, restoration and servicing are carried out. When you bring your clock to us, or ask us to repair or service one in your home, you can be sure it will be done by one of our expert technicians.

03/ I HAVE AN OLD CLOCK THAT HAS NOT WORKED FOR YEARS - CAN IT BE BROUGHT BACK TO LIFE?

Most clocks can be brought back to life. The damage or repairs that are required will dictate how long it takes for a full restoration of an older clock or timepiece and also how much it costs for full life to be restored to your old clock.

04/ CAN I MOVE A PENDULUM CLOCK??

Moving a pendulum clock from one room to another, another location within the same room or to a different premises requires a little preparation and lots of care. Pendulum clocks will need to have the pendulum held in place to avoid it being knocked out of beat. Longcase and Vienna regulator clock should be left to run down before moving it to avoid tangling the lines. If you have to move it before it runs down, tape the lines along with removing the weights when you lift it and ensuring the pendulum is held in place while moving.

05/MY CLOCK MADE A LOUD BANG AND STOPPED - CAN IT BE FIXED?

Most likely, yes! There are a few possible causes of this behaviour in clocks – the main spring may have broken or come loose from the winding arbor. A professional will need to be called as repairing this type of problem is a very delicate and difficult job. If your clock has behaved in this way and you want it repaired, this is also an ideal time to consider a full service, especially if it has not been seen to in five years or more.

06/ IS MY ANTIQUE CLOCK WORTH RESTORING?

Antique clocks are beautiful pieces of machinery and often have priceless sentimental value, or can fetch hundreds, if not thousands, of pounds if they are in excellent working order or restored with sensitivity to the period in which they were built. Our team and Glydon and Guess has over 77 years of combined experience fixing, restoring and servicing timepieces of all kinds.
