01/ CAN I EXCHANGE THE ENGAGEMENT RING IF MY FIANCÉ DOESN'T LIKE IT?
Choosing an engagement ring to surprise your bride-to-be is a very romantic, and nerve wracking, gesture. Before purchasing a ring as a surprise, take note of her jewellery style, the types of rings she admires in shop windows or friend’s fingers. If your fiancé doesn’t fall in love with the ring you have chosen for her, you can bring it back and exchange it for one of the same value, or trade the ring and pay the difference if she falls for something more expensive.
02/ HOW DO I KNOW HER RING SIZE?
Just like other parts of our bodies, fingers have specific sizes which are based on their circumference per millimetre correlating to a scale from F (smallest) to Z (largest) in the UK. You could try measuring her finger before making your purchase, but if you’re planning a surprise proposal, it is probably better to borrow one of her everyday rings and use that to estimate the size. At Glydon and Guess we’re able to resize rings if the fit is not right, or the ring sits uncomfortably on her finger.
If you are shopping for engagement rings together, the jeweller should be able to measure her finger size with the instore measuring rings. For the best fit, shop at the end of the day when fingers are at their largest.
03/ HOW MUCH SHOULD I SPEND ON AN ENGAGEMENT RING?
Tradition dictates an engagement ring should cost the equivalent of around three month’s salary, but don’t feel compelled to follow tradition! The amount you spend on an engagement ring should be dictated by how much you are comfortable parting with. Once you know the style, shape and type of gem for the ring (not every woman dreams of a diamond engagement ring), type and colour of the metal for the band it becomes easier to determine how much you are comfortable spending.
04/SHOULD I ASK FOR A DIAMOND CERTIFICATE WITH THE ENGAGEMENT RING?
Asking for a third party diamond certificate with the purchase of an engagement ring is a wise thing to do. It gives you a guarantee on the value of the gemstones and can be helpful when adjusting your insurance policy to cover the ring after purchase.
05/ WHAT SHOULD I CONSIDER WHEN PURCHASING AN ENGAGEMENT RING?
If purchasing a diamond engagement ring, the first thing to consider is its quality from the point of view of the four Cs – cut, clarity, colour and carat. Other considerations should include the bride-to-be’s preferred style of jewellery, her favoured type and colour of metal and gemstones that she likes. Not all brides dream of a diamond engagement ring, sapphires, rubies and emeralds can also feature in engagement rings and should be considered if these are more to your intended’s tastes.
06/HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT WEDDING RING STYLE?
Just as engagement rings should match the style of your fiancé, wedding rings should match each of the couple’s tastes. Traditionally, wedding rings were made to be exact matches in all ways apart from size. Today it is not uncommon for wedding rings to have differing or complimentary styles, be made from different metals or even include gemstones. Style of jewellery is a personal choice, shop around to find something you will each be happy to wear for the rest of your lives.
07/ CAN WE DESIGN OUR OWN WEDDING AND ENGAGEMENT RINGS?
